Colibri Trails (Finca 360’s Private Trails)
Finca 360 has about 3 kilometers of trails in the primary forest. At an altitude of 850 meters above sea level this forest is called the Premontane Wet Forest.
The premontane wet tropical forest is, after the dry tropical forest, the most tampered and shortened ecosystem in Costa Rica. In the country there is only a 1,75% of its original covering due to agriculture, and in Finca 360 we are very aware of this problem. Regenerating the forest in the bulk of the property is one the primary goals of the owners.
The pathways across the property let you admire how this new secondary forest has already taken off.
The trails are adjacent to Juan Castro National Park which is inhabited by a huge number of amphibians and reptiles. More than 250 species of birds have been observed, including toucans, scarlet and green macaws, the black-faced solitaire, the great curassow, the Montezuma oropendola, the emerald toucanet, the elegant trogon, the blue-throated goldentail, the spectacled owl, the spectacled amazon parrot, the three-wattled bellbird, the green parrot and the laughing falcon. The mammals that shelter in these forests are: cougars, jaguars, margays; howler monkeys, spider monkeys and capuchin monkeys; ocelots, tayras, kinkajous, two-toed sloths, coatis, peccaries, and giant anteaters.
As for vegetation, here different orchids coexist with tropical flowers, lots of species of palm trees and 10-20 meter tall trees.
The zone encompasses a biological corridor, whereby animals move about to visit Parque del Agua as Juan Castro National Park is called due to the amount of water that provides to 250 different communities.
